چکیده

ABSTRACT: Smoke haze related to biomass burning is a recurring environmental problem in Southeast Asia which has affected air quality not only in the source regions, but also in the surrounding areas. Air quality monitoring stations and meteorological stations in the region provide valuable information on the concentrations of criteria pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, ozone and particulate mass (PM10) during the haze episodes. Due to the limited coverage of the air quality monitoring stations, it is difficult to study and monitor the spatial and temporal variability of the smoke haze caused by biomass burning, especially in areas without ground-based instrumentation. As such, in this paper, we combine the standard in-situ measurements of PM10 with remote sensing imagery obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra and Aqua satellites. The columnar AOT is first derived from MODIS images for regions where PM10 measurements are available and a correlation between AOT and PM10 measurements is then established. Based on this empirical correlation, it is also shown that MODIS AOT can be used to estimate air quality categories as defined in the Air Pollutant Index (API) used by Malaysia’s Department of Environment (DOE) and the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) used by Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA). With this integrated approach, we hope to complement and enhance current capabilities in monitoring air quality during the haze episodes.

Typical types and formation mechanisms of haze in an Eastern Asia megacity, Shanghai

An intensive aerosol and gases campaign was performed at Shanghai in the Yangtze River Delta region over Eastern China from late March to early June 2009. This study provided a complementary picture of typical haze types and the formation mechanisms in megacities over China by using a synergy of ground-based monitoring, satellite and lidar observations. During the whole study period, several ex...

Remote Sensing Measurements of Aerosol Optical Thickness and Correlation with In-situ Air Quality Parameters during a Haze Epi

Thailand has experienced one of its worst hazes in 2007 due to intensive forest fires and slash-and-burn farming. The air quality monitoring stations and meteorological stations in Thailand provide valuable, concurrent information on the air quality during any period of the year and properties such as the concentrations of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, ozone and particulate ...

Aerosol characterization over the North China Plain: Haze life cycle and biomass burning impacts in summer

The North China Plain experiences frequent severe haze pollution during all seasons. Here we present the results from a summer campaign that was conducted at Xianghe, a suburban site located between the megacities of Beijing and Tianjin. Aerosol particle composition was measured in situ by an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor along with a suite of collocated measurements during 1–30 June 2013...

Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Climate Change Parameters Using Satellite Data for the Southeast Asian Region

The spatial and temporal variations of several environmental parameters over the Southeast Asia region recorded by remote sensing satellites for the past one to two decades are examined in relation to climate change. At the South China Sea, an increasing trend for sea surface temperature at a rate of 0.1 to 0.5 degree per decade was observed while the sea level anomaly increases at 2 to 6 cm pe...

Analysis of aerosol transport over southern Poland in August 2015 based on a synergy of remote sensing and backward trajectory techniques

Lufft’s CHM 15k “Nimbus” ceilometer and a collocated Cimel sunphotometer were used, in tandem with satellite data, to observe the transport of atmospheric aerosols over Raciborz, Poland, during an exceptionally warm month of August 2015. Two distinct periods are identified: increased aerosol optical thickness (AOT) values, exceeding 0.65, during August 6 to 13 concurrent with the planetary boun...
